The 111th Convocation of the Vishwavidyalaya was held on March 6,2011.As many as 1,050 students were conferred degrees Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar was the chief guest at the function.

Meira Kumar was given a traditional and cultural welcome in true Vedic style as brahamcharis (young Gurukul school students) welcomed her with musical band. A yagna was also performed amidst chanting of hymns and rituals were performed with the Speaker sitting on the floor with other guests. Felicitating the successful students on their achievement in the Gurukul this year, Kumar said, “I feel honoured to be in Gurukul, which is blessed to have been visited by a galaxy of great visionaries such as Mahatma Gandhi, Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya, Dr Rajendra Prashad, Dr Radha Krishnan, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi, Jamnalal Bajaj and many others.”Stressing on the significance of ‘Gurukul’ system of learning, Kumar further added: “It is good to see that since its inception in 1902, the Gurukul Kangri varsity has come a long way in providing an indigenous system of imparting education in vedic literature, Indian philosophy, Indian culture as well as modern sciences and research.”Taking about the nation’s youth, Kumar said, “The youth are the one who truly can meet the aspirations of a strong and leading India. If harnessed and channelised properly, they can really create history and make miracles happen.”Emphasising on the importance of universities and institutions of higher education, Kumar said, “As temples of learning and earning, these can be instrumental in opening up the intellectual horizons of young minds; taking them to higher stages of human endeavour; and equipping them to meet challenges of the day successfully.”

The visit of Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar on the 111th convocation ceremony of the Gurukul Kangri University was an emotional affair for her. In 1972, Meira had attended the convocation ceremony with her father late Babu Jagjeevan Ram. The moment she landed she enquired about the gaushalas (cow shelters) at the Gurukul, where she used to spend her time during her visits.
Other eminent guests present on the occasion were Chancellor of the university Sudershan Kumar Sharma, Vice-Chancellor Professor Swantra Kumar, the Pro-Vice-Chancellor Professor Mahavir Agrawal,Registrar Prof.A.K.Chopra, Speaker of Delhi Assembly and an alumini of Gurukul, Yogendra Shashtri and the State Tourism Minister, Madan Kaushik..
